Alliance Architects, Inc. (AAI) participates in two internship programs through the Richardson Independent School District, The Professional Internship Program (PIP) and the Berkner STEM Academy (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). AAI Project Coordinator Gloria Boyd attended a PIP while in high school. Therefore, she understands the importance of the programs in helping the students decide which professions are a good fit.
Gloria shares, “The students are selected for the program by application, interviews, and teacher recommendations. They must be students with good grades, conduct, and attendance and must have reliable transportation. Once students are selected by the school, resumes are sent to us and the resumes are reviewed by one of our Principals. An interview is conducted with the selected intern. Once an intern has been selected, and the AAI department in need has been specified, an agenda is created as well as a proposed workload. We want the department well versed on what the intern will be doing, and there will be no wasted time on the intern’s part nor the AAI employee who is training. Our goal is to keep the intern busy and make sure they are exposed to every facet of the job – almost like a real job. We like the added help too!”
So far, each of the students we have had the pleasure of working with, has been professional, goal oriented, and mature. We enjoy this program and participate in it annually, as it gives back to the community, as well as helps the students decide if architecture is the right profession for them.
