Scott Croix is a returning employee. We are glad to have him back in the office!
Why did you choose Architecture/Design?
I chose this field because of my grandfather (Bobby Thompson). I grew up watching him draw the most beautiful homes for people. Just the elegant and precision of drawing by hand and watching how he was able to take someone’s idea of their dream home and turn it into a reality for them. Due to that, I took Architectural Design in high school, and I fell in love with drawing –just like he did.
What advice would you give to recent new employees?
Ask questions. I do not have a formal education in Architecture/Design. However, from my experience, you can read, learn and study all you want, but your real education will not come from professors or from schools. It will come from the people you work with. Learn from them. You will make mistakes. Don’t look at those mistakes as a step back. Those are steps forward. You are learning, and in this field you never stop learning, so ask questions.
Who is your favorite architect/designer?
Well, I really don’t have a favorite. I could easily say my grandfather, Bobby Thompson, since he was the most influential to me and my career. However, I do like Gothic, Romanesque styles of architecture. I also like designs that use a lot of wood; for instance, old chapels. I like anything that incorporates wood in the structural design.
What are your hopes for our industry?
I would like to see a kind of revival in the old style architecture. I’ve seen a lot of new modern designs which are nice and just amazing to see. However, I would like to see some classical styles come back that would not only be pleasing to the eyes, but also give people an emotional experience.
If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life what would it be?
